Australian Architects

No comprehensive directory of architects who worked in Australia currently exists.  The following guide indicates useful materials for conducting searches.  It is divided into the following categories:

 

Biographical Dictionaries

Architects of Australia (bicentennial edition).  Melbourne: Images Australia, 1988.

'A record of current public and commercial architecture in Australia...' including the work of a number of significant architectural practices, their history and philosophy, current and recent projects.

Australian Artists' Index: a Biographical Index of Australian Artists, Craft Workers, Photographers and Architects , compiled by Jan McDonald.  Sydney: Arts Libraries Society, Australia and New Zealand, 1986

BAILLIEU REFERENCE 709.22 MCDO

Australian Dictionary of Biography .  Carlton: Melbourne University Press, 1966-.

An index volume, published in 1991, includes an occupational index under which architects are listed on pp.170-171 and builders on p. 177.

ARCHITECTURE  REFERENCE 920.094 AUST

A Biographical Register 1788-1939 : notes from the name index of the Australian Dictionary of Biography , compiled and edited by H.J. Gibney & Ann G.Smith.  Canberra: Australian Dictionary of Biography, 1987.

Volume two includes an occupational index under which architects are listed on pp.362-363 and builders on p.367.

BAILLIEU REFERENCE 920.094 BIOG

Donald Watson, Judith McKay.  Queensland Architects of the 19th Century: a Biographical Dictionary .  Brisbane: Queensland Museum, 1994.

While this volume is limited to Queensland, many of the architects listed worked elsewhere in Australia and overseas.  It includes biographical information, lists of work undertaken, portraits and illustrations of buildings.

Indexes & Directories

ARCH : Australian Architectural Database (via AUSTROM).

Includes Australian and New Zealand architecture and building information, including the work of architects.

Australian Architectural Index.

Includes a location, building type and architect listing.  The sources include Australian journals and newspapers from 1838 to 1941.

ARCHITECTURE MICROFICHE COLLECTION

Miles Lewis, Architectural Survey: Final Report .  Parkville: University of Melbourne Department of Architecture and Building, 1977.

This is a summary of a research project to compile an index to architectural information in periodicals published in Victoria and the identification and preservation of collections of architectural drawings.  It includes a listing of architects and firms which have been indexed.

ARCHITECTURE REFERENCE 016.7209945 LEWI

Sands & McDougall's Melbourne and Suburban Directory.  Melbourne: Sands & McDougall, 1863-

The annual directories include an occupational listing in which the names of architects and builders may be traced.

Monographs

Richard Apperley, Robert Irving & Peter Reynolds.  A Pictorial Guide to Identifying Australian Architecture : Styles and Terms from 1788 to the Present .  Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1994.

A copiously illustrated work including an index of people, firms and institutions on pp.291-294.  The work of many Australian architects is discussed together with their buildings and stylistic characteristics.

Includes on pp.236-255 biographical information, with portraits, relating to key Melbourne architects.

Includes on pp.212-229 biographical information, with portraits, relating to key Sydney architects.

ARCHITECTURE 720.99441 JAHN

Granville Wilson & Peter Sands.  Building a City: 100 years of Melbourne Architecture .  Melbourne: Oxford University Press, 1981.

Includes a list of architects on pp.180-197 who have worked in Melbourne, with dates of birth and death and brief biographical information.

ARCHITECTURE REFERENCE 720.99451 WILS

Architects of Australia , edited by Howard Tanner.  South Melbourne: Macmillan, 1981.

Includes biographical chapters on 15 key Australian architects or architectural practices.

ARCHITECTURE FOLIO 720.922 ARCH

Morton Herman, The Early Australian Architects and Their Work .  Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1970.

Examines the work of a number of important early architects, principally in New South Wales.

Theses

Includes in volume three an extensive bibiography pp.18-44 on the work of Australian architects over 1930s-1950s period

Peter Y. Navaretti, Architects of Melbourne and their Work (undergraduate thesis presented at the University of Melbourne 1971)

Julie Willis, Women in Architecture in Victoria 1905-1955: their education and professional life (Ph.D thesis presented at the University of Melbourne 1997)

Offers valuable biographical information  pp.222-303 on women who have contributed to the architectural profession in Victoria.

ARCHITECTURE STACK T2562

Please note that the Architecture and Planning Branch Library holds a very extensive collection of honours theses.  These include a large amount of information on Australian architects. Details may be checked via searching by WORD on the University Library's catalogue, using the following formula :
